What makes north Louisiana clay hard to drain
Along the Red River, the USDA describes the dominant clay soils as very deep, poorly drained and very slowly permeable, with clay content that can run above half the soil. The clay is smectitic, which means it swells as it takes on water and cracks as it dries out.
Once it is wet it stops taking in more water. With normal yearly rainfall of just over 51 inches in Shreveport, according to the National Weather Service, that happens many times a year.
Drainage approaches that work on clay
- Move water, don't soak it. Every drain on clay needs an outlet: the street, a ditch, a pond or a pop-up emitter at lower ground.
- Shape the surface. Swales and regrading move water across the top before it has a chance to sit.
- Capture roof water separately. Solid pipe from each downspout keeps the largest single source of water away from the house.
- Use French drains as conveyors. Wrap and pitch them to carry water to an outlet, not to disperse it into the soil.
What tends not to work
Dry wells and soakaway pits that depend on the ground absorbing water usually fill and stay full on heavy clay. Adding sand to a clay lawn rarely improves drainage and can make the surface harder. Raising one bed or patch of lawn often just sends the water to the next low spot.
Common questions
Is all of the Shreveport area heavy clay?
Not all of it. The river bottom soils are the heaviest; parts of west Shreveport and the uplands in Caddo Parish vary more. A test hole on your lot tells us how quickly your soil takes water.
Can I fix clay drainage with plants?
Deep-rooted plantings help at the edges, but they will not keep up with a hard storm. Use them alongside a proper outlet, not instead of one.
