What goes wrong with sump pumps
It will not start. Most often the float switch: it is stuck, jammed against the side of the pit, or worn out. Sometimes a tripped breaker or a dead outlet. Sometimes the motor. The first two are cheap fixes. The motor means a new pump.
It runs and never stops. A float that will not drop, a check valve that has failed so the water it just pumped runs straight back into the pit, or a pump that is too small for how much water the pit collects. On a very wet lot after heavy rain the pump may simply have a lot to do, and we can tell the difference.
It runs but the water does not go down. A blocked or frozen discharge line, a broken impeller, or a line that runs uphill further than the pump can push. The pump sounds fine and does nothing.
It quit in the middle of a storm. Power cut or an overworked motor. A battery backup covers the power cut, which is the most common way a house floods with a working pump in it.
It is loud, rattles or hums. Worn bearings, a jammed impeller, or a check valve slamming. Worth a look before it becomes a failure on the wrong night.

Repair when the pump is under about seven years old and the fault is a switch, a valve, a blocked line or a jammed float. Those are parts, not the pump. Replace when the motor has gone, when the pump has failed before, when it is older than seven or eight years, or when it is undersized for the water it gets and keeps running itself to death. A new pump in an existing pit is a couple of hours of work, and it is the point to add a battery backup if the house cannot afford to lose the pump in a power cut.
