What changes the price
How far the water has to go. Every drainage job ends at an outlet: a ditch, the street, a dry well or a pump. A short run to a nearby outlet is cheap. A long run, or a pump because the lot has no fall, is where the price climbs. This is the biggest single factor on most jobs.
How much digging. Length and depth. A shallow drain across a lawn is quick. A drain down to the footing of the house, or one that goes under a driveway, is not.
What is in the ground. Tree roots, old concrete, a buried patio, a gas or water line to work around. We find most of this on the visit, and the quote allows for it.
What has to be put back. Sod over the trench is included. Rebuilding beds, resetting pavers or patching concrete is priced on top and listed separately.
How many things are wrong. A yard that needs a regrade along the house and a drain through the lawn and the downspouts piped is three jobs on one visit. Doing them together is cheaper than three separate visits, and the quote shows each one.
How to read a drainage quote
Two quotes for the same yard can be thousands apart, and the difference is nearly always what is in them, not who is cheaper. Look for the length and depth of the trench written down. Look for the materials named: filter fabric, washed stone, the size and type of pipe. Look for the outlet: where the water goes, and what is at the end of the pipe. Look for whether the lawn goes back, and whether beds and hard surfaces are included or extra. Look for a start and finish. A quote that just says "install French drain" and a number leaves all of that to be argued about on the day. Ours lists every one of those items so you can compare it line by line.
Cheaper ways to fix it
Sometimes the expensive job is not the right one. If one downspout is dumping on the wet side of the house, piping that downspout for a few hundred dollars can be the whole fix. If the ground slopes toward the house, a regrade along the foundation may do more than a drain. If the water is in one low spot, a single catch basin beats a long trench. And if a drain is already there and just blocked, jetting it is a fraction of replacing it. Part of the visit is checking for the cheap fix before quoting the big one.
