Per foot: about $30 to $60 per foot installed in Shreveport. The low end is a shallow trench across open lawn with an easy outlet. The high end is a deep trench, a long solid-pipe run to the outlet, or digging through roots, rock or an old patio.

What moves the price
Length. The biggest factor. Every foot is trench, fabric, stone and pipe.
Depth. A drain to dry a lawn is shallow. A drain to keep water off a foundation or out of a crawl space has to go down to the footing, which is more digging and more stone.
The outlet. The water has to go somewhere lower: a ditch, the street through a pop-up, a dry well, or a sump pump. A short run to a nearby ditch is cheap. A long solid-pipe run to a distant outlet, or a pump because there is no fall at all, is where the price climbs.
What is in the way. Tree roots, buried concrete, an old patio, a driveway the pipe has to go under, a gas or water line to work around.
Putting it back. Sod over the trench is included. Rebuilding a bed, resetting pavers or patching concrete is priced on top.
What is not in the price. A sump pump if one is needed (see sump pump installation, $1,500 to $4,500), regrading along the house if the ground slopes the wrong way (see regrading), and any downspout runs beyond the ones tied into the drain.

The visit and the levels. The trench dug to the depth the job needs, with fall toward the outlet. Filter fabric lining the trench. Washed stone, not fines. Perforated pipe laid in the stone, then solid pipe from the end of the drain to the outlet. Any downspouts along the run tied in. The outlet itself: a pop-up emitter, a ditch outfall or a dry well. The trench backfilled, the lawn re-sodded or seeded, and the spoil taken away. One written price for all of it before we start, no add-ons on the day.
When a French drain is not the cheapest fix
If water sits against the house because the ground slopes toward it, a regrade along the foundation is usually the first thing to do and sometimes the only thing. If one downspout is causing the whole problem, piping that downspout underground for $500 to $2,500 can be the entire fix. If the water is in one low spot, a catch basin at $800 to $2,000 gets it out without a long trench. We tell you which one it is on the visit.
